Healthy monocytes express either interferon-sensitive proteins, such as the interferon-inducible protein MxA (red, I) or IL-1b (green, II). SLE blood monocytes (right) co-express both proteins (yellow, III). This abnormal co-expression may explain why treatments targeting only interferons may be inadequate in some patients with lupus.
